We report a case of femoral bone fracture with a history of pulmonary embolism, which was successfully treated by hemiarthroplasty with the insertion of an IVC filter. A 70-year old woman with a past history of pulmonary embolism was admitted to our hospital, suffering from femoral bone fracture. The hemiarthroplasty was performed under preoperative insertion of an IVC filter. 6 days later her leg swelled, and deep venous thrombosis caught by the IVC filter was found when CT scanning. Warfarin and heparin were administered. 52 days after the operation, she was discharged from the hospital without recurrence. The preoperative insertion of an IVC filter is a useful method for the prevention of pulmonary embolism in patients that have a previous history of it.
