We encountered 6 patients with undifferentiated carcinoma of the thyroid gland over 9 years. In cases 1,2 and 3, the tumors were anaplastic and infiltrated surrounding tissues as well. In their operations, the tumors were excised as much as possible and the removed tissue was found to be undifferentiated carcinoma within differentiated carcinoma. A few years later, all three of them were found with lung metastasis, which was the cause of their deaths. In cases 4 and 5, the patients were already in severe condition at first visit, and both lived for only a short while. Even though the tumor in case 6 was very large, it was localized. After 67.2 Gy of radiotherapy and 2 times of each CDDP, ADM, and VP-16 chemotherapy, the tumor was necrosed. The patient in case 6 has no recurrence and is still alive. From this case, we predict a good prognosis for localized tumors treated with combination therapy. It is important that a rapidly enlarging thyroid tumor be diagnosed several times by fine needle biopsy if undifference is suspected.
