Abstract

CATCH22 syndrome is a rare congenital disorder of submicroscopic deletions at 22q11.2 characterized by cardiac abnormalities, abnormal fades, thymic hypoplasia, cleft palate and hypocalcemia. A 3-year-old boy with CATCH22 syndrome was scheduled for a palatoplasty. He had been suffering from hypocalcemia-induced convulsions, which were successfully treated with medication, since 5 months of age. The possibility of the presence of cardiac defects was not considered in the routine preoperative examination. Anesthesia was induced and maintained with sevoflurane and nitrous oxide. Although difficulty in endotracheal intubation was anticipated due to his facial abnormalities, his trachea was intubated without any difficulty. The intraoperative course of this patient was uneventful.<br>Since CATCH22 syndrome may have multiple abnormalities, a careful preoperative examination is necessary to diagnose this syndrome.
