The relationship between amylase activity and electrophoretic patterns of digestive juice was analyzed on the basis of experimental results of accurate measurements of enzyme activity and electrophoresis.<br>When the amylase activity of digestive juice was measured by the Somogyi-Nelson method at the 4th day in the 5th instar larvae, the activities in+strains (p60, p50) were hundreds or thousands times stronger than that in ae strain (p61).<br>Two kinds of amylase isozymes were detected in the digestive juice by thin layer polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis: 1) cathodal isozymes showing a strong activity and 2) anodal isozymes showing a weak activity. Strains, p50 and p60 had 4 (4 type) and 5 (5 type) cathodal bands, respectively, but p61 had no cathodal bands (0 type).<br>Using 361 strains kept at the Institute of Silkworm Genetics of Kyushu University, amylase activity and cathodal isozyme types were analyzed. Only three types of cathodal isozymes, 4 type, 5 type, and 0 type were found among the strains. The cathodal isozymes were detected in the larvae of+strains but not in the larvae of ae strains. In some cases, two of the three types (4 type, 5 type, 0 type) were observed in a single strain.
