Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze patient evaluations of their distal extension base removable partial dentures for unilateral missing molars (Uni RPD), by examining the frequency of usage of present dentures, reasons for avoidance of wearing dentures, and general patient satisfaction with the dentures.
Methods: A questionnaire was sent to 251 patients who received (a) Uni RPD (s) from the Prosthodontic Department (September 1987-August 1997). A visual analogue scale was employed.
Results: The response rate was 61.2%(158/258). In terms of present usage of dentures, 45.6% of the respondents used their dentures every day, 12.0% used them sometimes, 23.4% did not use them at all, and 19.0% required the another set of dentures be made. In the group of patients not using their dentures at all, the average age was significantly lower than in the other groups (p=0.041). 60.6% of the patients in that group had stopped using the dentures within 3 months of setting. They interrupted denture use for reasons such as discomfort, tiredness, difficulty in chewing, pain, and difficulty in talking. The general satisfaction with the dentures differed significantly between the groups (p<0.00001). Frequency of use of the Uni RPD did not depend on the denture type, i.e. between dentures with and without retainers on the contralateral side, or between acrylic and metal plate dentures.
Conclusions: It remains unclear whether prosthetic therapy is generally effective for patients with unilateral missing molars. However, our results do suggest that younger patients find it more difficult to use a Uni RPD compared with elderly patients.
