The purpose of this study was to clarify, objectively, the relationship between mandibular and tongue movements during speech production in adult patients with moderate ankyloglossia. A sirognathograph analyzing system and an electropalatograph were used to record simultaneously.
1. The patients showed poor voluntary tongue movements in lateral directions.
2. Results of the syllable repetition test were normal, but strain appeared in fast during speech. The diadochokinesis rates of the syllable [ra] in patients were significantly lower than those of healthy subjects.
3. Articulatory movements for the sounds [sa] and [ta] were similar between ankyloglossia patients and healthy adults.
4. The mandibular position was more forward andupper in patients during [ka] and Japanese [ra] production.
5. Compared with the healthy subjects, the patients showed less tongue contact and variation in EPG patterns during [ra] production.
6. When the vowel following [r] was changed, the patients produced the sound in a higher position than the healthy subjects, irrespective of the vowel type.
Thus, in the adults with moderate ankyloglossia, articulation of some sounds differed from that in the normal adults, and limitations in tongue movements and poor voluntary tongue motility appeared to be compensated for by articulatory movements.
