To determine the organ protecting action of AT-III, isotonic sodium chloride solution or AT-III were administered intravenously to the house rabbit hypoperfunion model before the portal vein was obliterated. We examined the changes in systolic blood pressure, regional blood flow of the liver, number of white blood cells and platelets, hepatic cell enzyme levels (GOT, GPT, and LDH), the activities of vasoeffective factors (PGI2, NO, and endotheline), and arterial blood gases. After the obliteration discharge, the number of white blood cells didn't change though the regional blood flow and base exess (BE) returned to the values at the baseline, and the elevation of LDH was comparatively small in the AT-III group. As a result, AT-III could be recommended for prevention of liver-hypoperfusion injury by inhibition of accumulating white blood cells in the liver after the portal vein obliteration discharge.
