This study describes an exomiaticn of the immunohistochemical localization of type I, type II and typeX collagens, and hyaluronic acid binding protein (HABP) in the mandibular condylar cartilage of SAMR1 (senescence accelerated mouse, resistant) and SAMP8 (senescence accelerated mouse, prone). The mandibular condyles were taken from 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 month-old-female SAM.<br>In the condylar cartilage at 4 month-old SAMP8 compared with 2 month-old, the staining of type I collagen decreased in the intermediate and hypertrophic zone. Type II collagen not only increased in the hypertrophic zone but also in the articular and intermediate zones. Type X collagen was present in the pericellular matrix of the hypertrophic zone, and increased stain intensity located diffusely in the intermediate zone. HABP was present throughout the cartilage, and decreased in the intermediate and hypertrophic zones.<br>These changes were not observed in the 4 month-old SAMR1. These immunohistochemical changes were observed in the SAMP8 strain earlier than SAMR1, and thus this characteristic response may be related, at least in part, to accelerated senescence.
