Marine algal succession and effects of drift sands on the succession were studied on artificial reefs newly constructed on sandy bottoms at the depth of 3-5 m during the period from January 1995 through October 2000 off Hachimori in the Japan sea. Algal successions during about four years were classified from dominant life-form groups into four phases: 1) pioneer, small annuals and crustaceous algae; 2) early sere, crustaceous algae; 3) late sere, small perennials; 4) climax, large perennial fucoids. The successive phases to fucoids climax observed in this study coincided with those to kelps climax. Effects of drift sands on the succession were estimated from the relationship between dominant life-form groups observed two years and ten months after nudation and the coefficient of variations (Cv) in heights from sandy bottom surfaces to upper surfaces of artificial reefs for 12 months. Successional phases corresponded to pioneer or early sere at>100 that showed strongest effect of drift sands, late sere or climax at 51-100 and climax at 0-50.
