Blood samples from 1, 724 chickens consisting of twenty six populations of Japanese native chicken (Nihonkei), one population of the Chejudo native chicken in Korea and four populations of western Europe chicken breed were collected and analyzed on the protein polymorphisms. The proteins and loci analyzed were plasma transferrin (Tf), plasma albumin (Alb), plasma post albumin (PasA), plasma alkaline phosphatase (Akp and Akp-2), plasma esterase (Es-1), plasma amylase (Amy-1), plasma globulin (Glb-I), plasma slow α2 globulin (Slow2), erythrocyte catalase (Ct), erythro-cyte malic dehydrogenas (MDH), erythrocyte glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI), eryth-rocyte lactate dehydrogenase (LDH-A, LDH-B), and erythrocyte hemoglobin (Hb-I, Hb-II, Hb-III). Eight of eighteen loci analyzed were polymorphic. A dendrogram drawn by UPG method based on Nei's genetic distances among the populations showed the phylogenetic relationships among the populations of chickens as follows. The Goishi-Chabo was far from the Shiro-, the Kuro-, the Katsura- and the Shojou-Chabos which were closely related each other. The Daruma-Chabo was further distant from the other Chabos. The Onagadori and the Totenko were closely related each other, but they were distant from the Shokoku which was assumed to be an ancestor of them. The Minohiki and the Uzurao were near from the Totenko and the Onagadori, respectively. The Oh-Shamo and its hybrids (the Satsumadori, the Koeyoshi, the Kawachiyakko and the Jitokko) were near from each other, but they were far from the Koeyoshi, which was also assumed to had been crossed with the Oh-Shamo. The Gifu-Jidori, the TosaJidori, the IwateJidori, the Tsushima-Jidori were far from each other. The Tomaru and the Tsushima-Jidori were far from the other Japanese native chickens. Three dimension scatter diagram drawn based on the first principal component calculated from variance-covariance matrix of gene frequencies showed the similar results.
