Abstract

The brown shell egg White Leghorn hens bred by means of genetic transformation were investigated from the first (WL-γ1) to the fifth (WL-γ5) generations for the egg production performances. The three values (L value: brightness, a value: red component, and b value: yellow component) of egg shell color showed darker color degree along five generations gradually. The a and b values of WL-γ4 showed the higher than other generations. Discriminate functions were calculated after Z transformation using the three color values of egg shell color in five generations. The plots of each generation distributed in the range of Rhodehorn, (WL-G×RIR-Y8) F1. The Z value of one WL-γ4 exceeded the mean Z value of the Rhodehorn. The hen-day egg production rate and body weight of WL-r4 and WL-γ5 were decresase and increase, respectively, but egg weight was almost equivalent as compared with White Leghorn.
The L, a and b values of (WL-γ5×RIR-Y8) F1 showed low, high and high point compared with Rhodehorn, respectively. It was confirmed that (WL-γ5×RIR-Y8) F1 egg shell color was darker than Rhodehorn egg shell color. Egg production performances of (WL-γ5×RIR-Y8) F1 hens were by no means inferior to Rhodehorn.
These results showed that the genetic transformation of White Leghorn was successful for breeding a new brown egg line with high egg production.
