Abstract

The diversion system on urban expressway has been proposed as a measure to dissolve the traffic congestion in city centre. The system can be determined as a method of traffic management with the promotion for detour from congested sections. Firstly, the fundamental concept of diversion system is described. Impact of the diversion system implementation can be evaluated with the stochastic traffic assignment. Secondly, the optimal implementation of diversion system would be discussed with empirical studies. The diversion system on Hanshin Expressway is assumed as a real size network. The genetic algorithm is applied to search the optimal solution of allocation for the diversion system. It would be concluded that the optimal implementation of the diversion system can provide the efficient traffic as a practical traffic management method.
