Polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polystyrene (SBS) composites were prepared using organoclay (stearyl ammonium-modified montmollironite, C18-Mt) treated with stearic acid (SA) by the melt-mixing method. In SBS composites using C18-Mt treated with SA (C18-Mt(SA)/SBS composites), the particles of C18-Mt(SA) became smaller and were dispersed more uniformly with increasing the treating amount of SA to C18-Mt. The tensile modulus, the hardness and the tear strength of C18-Mt(SA)/SBS composites were superior to those of SBS composite with untreated C18-Mt (C18-Mt/SBS composite). For example, tear strength of 10wt% C18-Mt(SA)/SBS composite was 2.0 times higher compared to that of pure SBS, when the treating amount of SA to C18-Mt was 0.05 (weight ratio). The tensile strength and the elongation of C18-Mt(SA)/SBS composites were improved compared with those of C18-Mt/SBS composite. It was found that the treatment of C18-Mt with SA was useful to improve the mechanical properties and the dispersion of C18-Mt/SBS composite.
