Abstract
Histamine or methacholine have usually been employed as a stimulant of nasal hypersensitivity in nasal allergy patients. However standardized methods of evaluation of nasal hypersensitivity still have not been established. To attempt to establish the appropriate method of evaluation of the histamine challenge to the nasal mucosa, we measured nasal resistance with rhinomanometry, and the intra nasal volume between the nostril and 4cm posterior from the nostril with acoustic rhinometry before, 10min, 20min, and 30min after a local histamine (0.001%, 0.01%, 0.1%, 0.25%, 0.5% and 1%) challenge. During the examination, nasal resistances in several patients were not measured with active anterior rhinomanometry because of complete unilateral blockage after the histamine challenge. In contrast, in all patients measurement with active posterior rhinomanometry using a fine nasal catheter and acoustic rhinometry could be achieved in spite of complete unilateral nasal blockage after the histamine challenge. There were significant differences in the mean value of nasal resistance as seen with active posterior rhinomanometry between normal subjects and nasal allergy patients at 20min and 30min after the 0.5% histamine challenge, and there were significant differences in the mean value of the nasal volume between normal subjects and patients at 10min after the 0.01% and 20min after the 0.25% histamine challenges.
