The aim of this study was to investigate the caries preventive effect of polyvinyl alchohol (PVA) film with NaF in vitro. Four types of PVA films of different NaF concentrations were prepared. Enamel blocks were cut from bovine incisor teeth and PVA films were placed on each enamel sur-face. After demineralization using 0.1 M lactic acid (pH 4.6) at 37°C for 10 days, the samples were sliced into 150μm-thick sections. A transversal microradiogram was used to evaluate mineral content profiles and calculate the integrated mineral loss (IML :vol%×μm) and lesion depth (Ld :μm) of the enamel subsurfaces. In addition, an electron probe microanalyzer was used for detecting fluoride in the lesions.
The results obtained were as follows :
1. The group with the PVA film without fluoride group showed less demineralized enamel compared with the group without the film group, and IML was reduced significantly on the specimens film with NaF content film with PVA of 0.22 and 0.44 were almost the same.
2. The concentration of NaF in 0.22 PVA film may be the proper concentration for inhibition of enamel demineralization.
3. Fluoride peak was detected to a similar depth of the highest vol% in lesion profiles.
4. Fluoride released from PVA film will inhibit demineralization, enhance remineralization with pre-cipitating fluoroapatite in the lesions and may be effective for prevention of incipient enamel caries.
