Abstract

Luminescence properties under a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation investigated for phosphors in SrO-B2O3-P2O5 ternary system. The borophosphates have a relatively strong absorption band in a VUV region because of strong covalent characters of B-O and P-O bonds. One of these phosphors activated by Eu2+ showed a strong luminescence, which is about twice as bright as a commercial blue phosphor, BAM (BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+). This can be an attractive candidate of phosphors for plasma display panels (PDPs) and mercury-free fluorescent lamps.
