Abstract
We recorded all the focal abnormalities detected in women screened for breast cancer by ultrasound at Tsukuba Total Health Plaza. Among the 200 women tested, the number with focal abnormalities was as high as 48 (24%) : 28 (14% of the total) had simple cysts, and 20 (10%) had either solid masses or complex cysts. Although the diameters of some simple cysts exceeded 20 mm, in most cases the diameters of the abnormalities were equal to or less than 15 mm. Therefore, given the high percentage of abnormalities detected with ultrasound, it is clear that stricter criteria for deciding whether or not a lesion requires further examination are still needed.
