  Melts of pheroidal graphite cast iron were poured into a phenol sand mold at various temperatures in order to investigate the cooling curves, graphite structure, and shrinkage volume. The surface of each casting was analyzed by EDS. <br>  The results show that as the pouring temperature becomes higher, the eutectic solidification time increases; the spheroidal graphite nodule count decreases and the nodules become larger; and the volume of the shrinkage cavity increases. When the pouring temperature exceeds 1730 K pouring temperature, multiple cavities of very small volume are formed instead of a single cavity. It was also found that the mushy degree of eutectic solidification increases with an increase in the pouring temperature. <br>  The reasons for the increase in shrinkage cavity volume as the pouring temperature rises are thought to be (i) decrease of carbon dilatation during eutectic solidification, (ii) increase of skeleton structure part, and (iii) increase in mushy degree of eutectic solidification.
