Abstract

Results of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to investigate theGiardia intestinalisantigen in the feces of 358 household dogs aged from 1 to 6 months were comparedwith theGiardia-cystdetection rates obtained using the formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation technique. TheGiardia-antigen positive rate (22.9%: 82/358) was significantly higher than the Giardia-cyst detection rate (15.1%: 54/358). The Giardia-antigen rate was higher in small-sized indoor dogs as Chihuahuas. No antigens were detected inmongrel dogs. The positive rate of indoor dogs (25.5%: 79/310) was significaiitly higher (P<0.01) than that of outdoor dogs (6.3%: 3/48). Dogs purchased from pet shopsor breeding kennels showed a significantly (P<0.01) higher positive rate (29.8%: 79/265) than dogs originating in private households (3.2%: 3/93).
