Abstract

This paper presents a new method for constructing an example-based deformable hand model from medical images. Estimation of link structures and skeleton driven surface deformation are essential for the precise deformation of the hand. Therefore, the proposed method uses medical images of hands in several poses. Our method consists of the following three steps. First, using bone shapes, we estimate link structure (rotation center) and the joint angles of each scan. Second, we construct mutually consistent polygonal meshes of all the scans. For this purpose, a polygonal mesh of one pose, the base mesh, is deformed and fitted to other poses. The base mesh is, first, deformed using skinning method, and then fitted interactively to the measured mesh. Finally, the hand is deformed by using pose space deformation. We demonstrate results of hand deformation with about 50,000 vertices from CT scans.
