This study aims to clarify features of speech accommodation by nursing care staff members when communicating with the elderly suffering from dementia. This study takes as subjects nursing care staff members and adults of the same generation with no relevant specialization. These two groups were asked to talk to people of the same generation (peer condition), healthy elderly people (golden ager condition), and elderly people suffering from dementia (dementia condition) as speech targets in implemented speech simulation. This study also requested the two groups to give their opinions about the degree of appropriateness of the speech accommodation for each target. Analyzing six categories and 14 indices of the sound of the voices, this study demonstrates that a separate speech accommodation exists, promoted when the targets are the elderly and the elderly with dementia. This study also shows that a specific speech register is used as a feature of nursing care staff members. Meanwhile, in the assessment of the degree of appropriateness, the desirable degree of speech accommodation was reached by adults in the same generation, healthy elderly people, and elderly people with dementia in that order. The results were separate from those for the sound of the voice.
