Introducing a Remote Lecture into Regular Class

Abstract

Recent developments and popularization of network systems and multimedia devices stimulate to give birth to a new system in education i.e. remote lecture system. This system however gives rise to the new problem of economical use for real classes. Satellite-channels and exclusive ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networks, for instance, are now available for transmitting images, pictures and voices as bi-directional communication media but they have difficulties in the cost efficiency for the regular classes. ISDN(Integrated Services Digital Network) instead possesses superiority to them in cost performance because it is usable with simple system devices and low regular costs though it is slow in speed of communication.<BR>The authors monitored the lectures for regular classes that were given with the newly developed remote lecture system combining the conventional Tele-conference system of ISDN with multimedia devices.<BR>Fifteen lectures were given for about 60 students at Nippon Institute of Technology in Saitama Prefecture by the professor at Osaka University.<BR>This article reports on the results especially about the practical effectiveness of the developed system, the investigation of the consciousness of the student attendants by the inquiry and the issues for better performance.<BR>The article also describes about the proposals for a compensation method of low transmitting characteristics of ISDN with using sub-channel and for a method of strengthening communication performance by the regional response analyzer system developed specifically.<BR>Finally, the effective utilization of bi-directional media such as internet system, facsimile system and postal service system is discussed in addition to the technology of transmitting and receiving the images and voices through the Tele-conference system.
