Abstract

宇宙線研究で使われる日本発の検出器であるエマルションチェンバー(ECC)は,時間のかかる顕微鏡作業の難点が自動「飛跡読み取り装置」の開発によって克服され,タウニュートリノの発見に使われた.使う直前に飛跡の潜像を消去できる原子核乳剤の開発と,その乳剤を機械塗布したOPERAフィルムの開発によって,τ粒子を識別するv_μ→v_τのappearance実験OPERAが実現した.飛跡読み取り装置の活用を前提に最適化されたECCはMicro Segment Chamber(MSC)と名を変えて大気球による宇宙電子観測に使われ始めた.このMSCは,宇宙線事象ごとに時間情報を与えるなど,宇宙線研究の新しい可能性を含んでいる.最後にダークマターWIMPsの検出を目的にした原子核乳剤の超微粒子化なども紹介する.

An Emulsion Cloud Chamber has been widely used to study high energy cosmic rays. Recently, this detector has been extensively improved and developed to a Micro Segment Chamber (MSC). The MSC basically consists of a stack of thin and low-background emulsion film which can be used for high-speed image processing. A sophisticated image processing technique makes it possible to analyze a lot of emulsion films of a kiloton scale. Using this MSC, we have succeeded to detect v_τ events, and are going to start the OPERA experiment at CERN to search for v_μ-v_τ oscillation phenomena. In this article, we briefly introduce the performance and the balloon-borne MSC designed for observing cosmic ray electrons. We also discuss the possibility of searching for WIMPs using super-fine grain emulsion films.
