Abstract

A 57-year-old man complained of right chest pain. Chest X-ray film and chest CT showed some pleural effusion and pleural thickening in the right thorax. We suspected that he suffered from diffuse pleural mesothelioma, because he had an experience of working with exposure to asbestos. After right thoracotomy frozen section of parietal pleura diagnosed pleural fibrosis, we performed pleurectomy of the thickened parietal pleura with the hope of relieving his chest pain. After the operation he no longer complained of chest pain. Pleural effusion and pleural thickening did not progress in the right thorax.
Ten years later chest X-ray film and chest CT showed some pleural effusion in his left thorax. We carried out a video-assisted pleural biopsy. The diagnosis “pleural fibrosis” the same as for the right one. Thus, we performed only chest tube drainage, with no sign of recurrence.
We conclude that early thoracoscopic examination is preferable for a patient with asbestos exposure who has a pleural effusion of unknown origin. Pleurectomy is an effective operative method to relieve chest pain originating from pleural fibrosis.
