This paper describes two cases of foreign body ileus due to lodgment of a Japanese apricot seed with a review of the pertinent literature.<br> Case 1: A 78-year-old woman was seen at the hospital because of the sudden onset of abdominal pain and vomiting. The patient was diagnosed as having intestinal obstruction due to colon cancer and a foreign body. Therefore, operation was done. At laparotomy, a seed was impacted at the ulcer of the type 2 colon cancer.<br> Case 2: A 79-year-old woman complaining of abdominal pain was referred to our hospital for operation after unsuccessful conservative therapy under a diagnosis of ileus at another hospital. There was a previous history of undergoing operation with radiation therapy for ovarian cancer at the age of 60. At laparotomy, stenosis of the ileum probably due to radiation colitis and a seed incarcerated in the stenosis were observed.<br> Only 10 cases of intestinal obstruction due to a seed have been reported in our country. In 9 cases of them, some organic stenosis of the intestinal tract was recognized. Cancer in older patients and inflammatory bowel disease in younger patients contributed to the obstruction of the intestinal tract due to a seed. These instances illustrate that ever a small round seed could be the cause of intestinal obstruction if the patient has organic stenosis of the intestinal tract.
