Abstract
The aim of this study is to characterize the adhesive properties of the epoxy resins including mono-functional monomers with different polarity. Imidazole cured diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A was used as the base epoxy resin. The shear adhesive strength of the formulated resin to aluminum substrates became increased as the content of glycidyl phthalimide (GPI) which is a mono-functional epoxy with high polarity was enhanced. When t-butyl phenyl glycidyl ether was used as a monofunctional epoxy, almost no improvement in adhesive strength was achieved. This suggested that the decrease of the residual internal stress within the adhesive layer was no tthe major reason t o explain the improvement in the adhesive strength of the resin with GPI. FT-IR analyses revealed that the imide (carbonyl) groups were concentrated in the region neighboring the interface to aluminum substrate during the curing process. GPI with high polarity would have high affinity and attractive interaction to metal substrates with high polarity, which caused the improvement in the adhesive strength.
