Abstract

In this study, the Japanese traditional building materials “Tsuchi-shikkui” was used for making planting pots. This method is applying for a patent in Japan (PAT. P. No.2005-227460). The“Tsuchi-shikkui” is composed of soil, slaked lime, straws, bittern and so on. This material would be useful for the product design such as planting pot because they are originally natural materials and recyclable. Additionally, it will be a good design material which can be easily handled for shaping and colouring. In this paper, it was examined: the applicability for making a plant pots and the effects to the planting soil in the planting pots. First of all, the strength test was taken and the result of that the proper combination of the materials was used for making the planting pots. Secondary, the plastic pots were given for control experiments and pH, moisture content of the soil, temperature of the soil were measured respectively. As the result of the experiments, the quantitative data revealed as follows: 1) The strength is enough for making planting pots. 2) The water drainage and absorption of the “Tsuchi-shikkui” pots were much higher than plastic pots. It was thought that “Tsuchi-shikkui” pots had effectiveness of water control. 3) The temperature of the soil in the “Tsuchi-shikkui” pot were 4 degree lower than plastic pot in one day in summer. Therefore, the “Tsuchi-shikkui” could be one of the good materials for making greening products such as planting pots.
