抄録

The growth and maturation cycle of the brown alga Sargassum fusiforme and the cell numbers of sessile diatoms attached on thalli of the alga were observed in a field. Photosysnthetic rates of the alga and two sessile diatoms Navicula britannica and Cylindrotheca closterium were measured under different light intensities, water temperatures and salinities in a laboratory. The alga showed the maximum length of main branches and matured in July throughout the year. In August, the main branches matured withered and shed, and new main branches germinated. Cell numbers of sessile diatoms attached on the alga thalli markedly increased in July. From the photosynthetic characteristics, the alga had more extensive threshold to light and temperature than the two sessile diatoms, but that to salinity was restricted. It seemed that the alga was attached by sessile diatoms under low salinity below 8 psu.
