“ImmunoCard Mycoplasma®” (IC-MP) qualitatively detects Mycoplasma Pneumoniae (MP) specific IgM antibody, and is widely accepted as a rapid diagnostics for acute MP infection. We used the kit to examine the relationship between MP infection and acute exacerbation of asthma in children.Of 80 children (0-14y/o) hospitalized for severe asthma, IC-MP was positive in 63.8%; while 70.7% in the control group of 133 allergic children with stable asthma, atopic dermatitis and/or food allergy was proven positive. Most of IC-MP positive serum samples were shown to have low values of particle agglutination (PA) antibodies, and repeated IC-MP tests were persistently positive for more than one year. Thus, positive IC-MP in a single sample only indicates past history of MP infection. In order to examine the role of MP infection in acute exacerbation of asthma, either the proof of MP existence in the respiratory tract or significant rise of MP specific antibodies in paired sera should be investigated.<BR>However, in the younger age group (1-3y/o), contrary to our expectations, significantly higher positive rate of IC-MP was observed in the control group (76.8%), compared with acute asthma group (48.9%: p=0.003).Further investigation is necessary to find out the explanations for this intriguing data.
