Abstract

This paper aims to define measures to evaluate future alternative models of housing and town planning in developing countries, from viewpoint of reducing CO2 emission. For that purpose, 900 houses from 13 planned housing complexes in 7 Indonesian cities were investigated. Through this survey, (1) daily usage of fuels and electricity, (2) consumption of fuels through transportation for daily activities, and (3) consumption of building material are monitored. In the modern history since 1970's, export of timber causing inflation accelerated change from timber traditional houses to masonry houses, along with domestic production of cement and bricks, which were also basic conditions of housing strategies supplying block houses. However, in future, requirements for appropriate material flow will imply new models for housing and town planning, which will be evaluated through those measurements.
