It has been reported that the plasma adiponectin (ADPN) level was reduced in patients with coronary artery diseases. To investigate the relationship between coronary artery calcification and plasma ADPN, calcium metabolism patients in with hemodialysis (HD), we measured the Agaston score, as a indicator of coronary artery calcification, using multi-slice CT, calcium (Ca)×phosphate (P) product and parathyroid hormone (intact-PTH) in 32 patients with chronic hemodialysis. The Agaston score was related positively to the Ca×P product, intact-PTH and duration of HD, but inversely to plasma ADPN. These findings suggest the possibility that a low plasma ADPN level, as well as the abnormal calcium metabolism, is a risk factor for coronary artery calcification.
