Abstract

A 20-year-old woman who had undergone an appendectomy for chronic appendicitis 11 years earlier was seen at the hospital because of right lower abdominal pain in January 2006. There were severe tenderness and rebound tenderness at the surgical wound left after the appendectomy. Abdominal ultrasonography showed a low echoic space in the subfasial structure at the surgical wound. Abdominal CT scan disclosed a low density area. From these imaging findings, the patient was diagnosed as having an abdominal abscess and was operated on. At surgery we performed percutaneous drainage for the lesion while we ensured not to induce penetration of the abscess to the abdominal cavity under laparoscopic cbservation. The patient was discharged from the hospital on the 7th postoperative day. No recurrence has occurred up to now.<br>We report the case of an abdominal abscess developed more than 10 years after appendectomy which was considered rare.
