Abstract

From April to July 1997, six outbreaks of influenza in school children occurred in Okayama Prefecture. A total of 34 throat swabs from 21 school children and from 13 patients with symptoms of the upper respiratory tract of outpatients in some hospitals, were examined for influenza virus, and influenza B viruses wereisolated from 7 school children and 3 patients. By hemagglutination inhibition (HI) tests, 8 of the 10 isolates were antigenically distinct either from the vaccine strain B/Mie/1/93 used in 1996 and 1997 or from the influenza B isolates from 1990 to 1995 in Okayama Prefecture. For the B variant isolate (B/Okayama/68/97) HIantibody was negative in 77 of 100 inhabitants in Okayama Prefecture, and all 20children younger than 10 years old were sero negative.
