Abstract

The history and the progress of education of ostomy rehabilitation for surgeons and nurses during the last decade in Japan are discussed. The problems that faces surgeons and nurses to be solved in the near future are as follows. 1.What kind of stoma care specialist and how many well-educated and well-trained medical stuff should be required in the field of ostomy rehabilitation? 2.We should teach surgeons and nureses to make a study of and to make a clinical research for ostomy rehabilitation using a scientific method. 3. Surgeons and nureses who devote themselves to educate ostomy rehabilitation are required. 4.Education should be performed for not only masses of medical stuff but also individualized one. 5.Surgeons and urologists are lack of knowledge and experience of ostomy rehabilitation. They should learn ostomy rehabilitation wholeheartedly. 6.Nurses who studied ostomy rehabilitation and want to take care of ostomates should have proper positions in hospital. 7.lt is also important to teach visiting nurses ostomy rehabilitation. 8.Ostomy rehabilitation activities should not be done as voluntary services. 9. Education of ostomy rehabilitation should be properly evaluated in the rapid reform of medical economy.
