We investigated the availability and safety of cholangiotomy for common bile duct stones via the cystic dust. In this study, diameter of the common bile ducts, operation time, duration of postoperative hospital stay, postoperative complications and transition of liver and bile duct enzymes were compared between 28 patients undergoing cholangiotomy for common bile duct stones via the cystic duct (C group) and 16 patients undergoing T-tube drainage (T group) from 1994 to 2003. As a result, a significant shortening of duration of postoperative hospital stay (P<0.01) and a decrease in the numbers of postoperative complications were shown in C group. Cholangiotomy for common bile duct stones via the cystic duct is an available and safe method. We suggest that this method can become the first choice of surgical procedure for common bile duct stones.
