Abstract

A 55-year-old man was seen at the hospital because of the first onset of left pneumothorax. Because air leak persisted despite tube thoracostomy, the patient underwent a partial resection of the lung by video-assisted thoracic surgery. The postoperative histologic examination revealed tumor cells growing in the bulla, with papillary structure and partly replacing the alveolar lining of the lung parenchyma. The diagnosis was made as small lung adenocarcinoma originated from the lung parenchyma neighboring to the bulla. Both preoperative chest CT scan and intraoperative exploration showed no evidence of lung cancer.<br> Pneumothorax occuring in patients in their middle years or older can have associated lung cancer and needs careful studies.
