Abstract

A 79-year-old woman presenting with cutaneous metastases from breast cancer is reported. The primary lesion had been excised 20 years previously. The patient demonstrated a red, 35 mm in diameter, indurated mass on her scalp, and a red, 17 mm in diameter nodule near the site of the surgical removal of the primary tumor. The histopathological findings on the scalp and chest revealed poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma and highly differentiated adenocarcinoma, respectively. The cellular proliferating activities based on cytofluorometric DNA measurement, AgNORs staining, and immunostaining for PCNA exhibited a high degree of malignancy. However, the estrogen receptor in the tissue specimens, which is thought to be a useful prognostic indicator for breast cancer, showed a high level. These results suggested that the action of estrogen either inhibited or slowed dawn the growth of tumor cells during the 20-year latent period between removal of the primary tumor and appearance of skin metastases.
