抄録

The first large-scale machine application of asphalt pavement in Japan was executed on National Highway 36 between the cities of Sapporo and Chitose, Hokkaido Prefecture. This paper reports on how this road section came to be constructed. It also explains the then state-of-the-art construction methods and materials for cold, snowy regions. In-situ tests and sample collection were conducted on the highway's 50-year-old pavement body, and deterioration of the following was evaluated: surface conditions, bearing capacity, strength and composition. Many of the pavement performance indicators still meet current standards. It was confirmed that the road section can remain in service.
