Abstract

We report on 13 patients who underwent voice restoration treatment using a free ileocolic graft after total pharyngolaryngoesophagectomy.<BR>All of them successfully recovered swallowing function without aspiration. Twelve patients could shunt air from the trachea into the reconstructed pharyngoesophagus, and eight patients were able to acquire good voice function. However, only four patients out of eight used acquired voice in routine communication. The remaining four patients communicated mainly using hand gestures and writing. Patients more than 70 years old could not speak well.<BR>We concluded that this method depends not only on the extent of tumor expansion but also on the patient's specific needs, personality, level of understanding, and age. We can state that this method can be considered as a valuable option offering an immediate restoration of swallowing and voice function for pharyngoesophageal reconstruction.
