抄録

This article describes the progress of artificial lungs, centering on the historical context and the trends in its research and development. While the performance of artificial lungs for open-heart surgery has become sufficient, the increase in the number of its uses in assisted circulation such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and percutaneous cardiopulmonary support (PCPS) cases is showing significant growth. Along with such clinical trends, research and development towards next generation artificial lungs are active in the field of assisted circulation, focusing upon safe long-term use. Approaches include preventing plasma leak by developing durable gas-exchange membranes, enhancing hemocompatibility by heparin-bonding surface treatment, developing a novel device by integrating the oxygenator with the blood pump, and developing an implantable artificial lungs such as intravenous oxygenator. The next-generation artificial lungs will not only benefit a multitude of patients but represent an important target with a prospect for expansion of the artificial lung's market from the standpoint of the enterprises. In future, further expansion of research and development in this field as well as progress in practical and clinical applications of innovative devices are expected.
