Abstract

We present an efficient, example-based skinning method using interpolations of normal maps. First, we generate simplified meshes with normal maps from the measured meshes of several poses. We then construct meshes whose parameterizations and normal maps are mutually consistent. That is, a triangle mesh of one pose, a source mesh, is deformed interactively to be consistent with other sample meshes using specified feature points and feature curves. A weighted pose-space deformation combined with the method of interpolating normal maps is presented to generate efficient realistic deformations. We apply the proposed method to shape interpolation and example-based skinning, and demonstrate its effectiveness.
