<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>A self-assembled monolayer of a rotaxane (rotaxane-SAM) consisting of N-(3,5-dimethoxybenzyl)-N′-6-mercaptohexylbipyridinium dibromide and α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) was successfully prepared using a potential sweep method by which unfavorable adsorption of α-CD and viologen dimer can be controlled.</jats:p>
