Abstract

A method of sustenance of early weaned calves by ruminal infusion of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and major minerals and by abomasal infusion of casein, trace minerals and vitamins was studied. Calves (n=9) were wholly nourished by these purified nutrients from weaning age (5 to 7 wk) to 7 mo of age. Polypropylene ropes as substitute roughage were placed in the rumen to stimulate rumen development. For a few weeks after weaning, calves were successfully infused with VFA at the level of maintenance energy, when the concentration of VFA solution was 0.7-1.0 mol/l and that of buffer solution was 0.2-0.3 mol/l. At 5 mo of age, calves could be infused with nutrients up to twice maintenance. The proportion of the reticulo-rumen to empty body weight of the calves nourished by intragastric infusion for 4 to 6 mo was similar to that of calves fed conventional diets, but the proportions of the omasum and intestine were smaller. The rumen papillae were paddle-shaped and narrow. Daily body weight gain of calves nourished at the level of 1.3 times maintenane was 0.3kg/d, whereas that at 2.0 times maintenance was 0.8kg/d.
