Vitamin C deficiency in cattle and young calves has been reported, while the. information was little with fattening beef cattle. In this experiment, serum vitamin C concentration was measured in fattened or fattening Japanese Black cattle as an index for nutritional status of vitamin C. Blood samples of 78 commercial Japanese Black cattle were collected at a local slaughterhouse and analyzed. Serum vitamin C level was 26.4±2.2μM(4.6-95.3μM). Serum vitamin C levels widely varied depending on the cattle and suggested that some may be under deficient condition of vitamin C. Change in serum vitamin C concentration was also determined in four Japanese Black steers, which were fattened from 10 to 32 months old. Blood samples were collected at 2-month intervals. The mean value of serum vitamin C concentration at the initial time off attening was above 60μM, and it decreased significantly with advancing fattening period. Thus vitamin C supplementation of available form for cattle (rumen-bypass vitamin C) is considered to be preferable in fattening beef cattle.
