Abstract

This experiment was carried out to examine the lymphocyte blastogenesis and concentrations of serum haptoglobin (HP) and α1-acid glycoprotein (α1-AGP) in normal calves and calves on the first onset of diarrhea. Thirty five normal Japanese Black calves and 75 calves with diarrhea caused by rota virus infection, coccidiasis and strongyloides, aged from 3 to 35d, were used. The lymphocyte blastogenesis induced by concanavalin A (ConA; 6.4μg/ml) was determined by a whole blood culture of haparinized-blood and RPMI-1640 medium (1:19) containing 8% fetal calf serum (FCS). The lymphocyte blastogenesis induced by ConA was significantly lower in calves with diarrhea than those in normal calves. The HP was not detected in the sera of all normal calves. However, the serum HP was appeared in 35 of 73 calves with diarrhea (47.9%), showing 262±196mg/l (ranging from 50 to 700mg/l). There was no significant difference in the concentration of serum α1-AGP between the nomlal calves (402±69mg/l) and calves with diarrhea (440±102mg/l). These results show that the lymphocyte function has been decreased and the serum HP can be detected in about one half of the newborn calves on the first onset of diarrhea.
