Abstract

A study was undertaken to determine the effect of pregnancy and the number of fetus on rate of forage particle passage through the alimentary tract of Holstein dairy cows carrying single (n=5), twin (n=3) Japanese Black fetuses and single (n=10) Holstein fetus during last trimester of pregnancy. The Ytterbium labeled forage (500g air dry) was fed as marker of particulate matter and fecal grab samples were collected for measurement of digesta passage at 210 and 266 days of pregnancy. Dry matter intake (DMI) was decreased from 10.07 kg/day at 210 days to 9.11 kg/day at 266 days of pregnancy in twin pregnant cattle. The average birth weight of calf was 40kg for sinlgle and 61kg for twin, indicating apparently bigger volume of gravid uterus among twins than singletons. The passage of digesta became more rapid as influenced by increased feeding level as well as the advancing pregnancy in cows carrying singletons. However, the increasing passage rate of digesta was not observed among twin pregnant cattle as pregnancy progressed. Likewise, the depressing effect of digestive tract capacity in twin pregnant cows as affected by increasing in gravid uterus volume was not observed. The passage of digesta became more rapid as the feeding level was increased and as the pregnancy was advanced in cows carrying single. However, the increasing passage rate of digesta was not observed in twin pregnant cattle as pregnancy progressed. The effect of depression of digestive tract capacity by increasing gravid uterus volume was not observed in twin pregnant cattle. Therefore, it can be considered that decreasing DMI prevent increasing passage rate of digesta.
