Abstract

Background: The condition of the upper airway is known to affect lower airway physiology, and lead to or exacerbate lower airway disease. Surgical management of chronic sinusitis has been found to improve pulmonary function and symptoms, but how chronic sinusitis affects pulmonary function is unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the pulmonary function of chronic sinusitis patients.<br>Methods: The subjects of the study were 139 patients treated in our hospital between January 2002 and March 2005. The subjects were divided into six groups. A group with some other disease who did not have chronic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, asthma (Group 1, the control group), a group with chronic sinusitis (Group 2), a group with chronic sinusitis and asthma (group 3), a group with chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis (Group 4), a group with allergic rhinitis (Group 5), and a group with asthma (Group 6), The pulmonary function of each patient was evaluated by measuring %VC, FEV 1.0%, PEFR%, MMF%, V50%, V25%.<br>Results: The average score of FEV 1.0%, MMF%, V50%, V25% in Group 3 was significantly lower than Group 1. The difference was not significant between Group 1 and Group 2, Group 1 and Group 6.<br>Conclusion: The result showed that chronic sinusitis is not a direct factor in causing pulmonary dysfunction but a factor that exacerbates lower airway disease.
