Abstract
Sclerosing therapy for internal hemorrhoids using aluminum potassium sulfate and tannic acid (ALTA) as active ingredients has been used at Kunimito Hospital since April 2005, becoming our most frequent choice for patients with anal diseases. In 1,000 patients, good results have been obtained overall. Indications for ALTA sclerosing therapy performed up to May 2007 have been internal hemorrhoids in 885 cases, rectal mucosal prolapse in 101, and total rectal prolapse in 30. One patient had strangulation of internal hemorrhoids and three had rectal ulcers as complications of ALTA sclerosing therapy. In 526 patients with ALTA, as the sole initial treatment for internal hemorrhoids, recurrence developed in 28 (5.3%) during the follow-up period, and 13 required an additional injection therapy procedure for cure. Recurrence developed in 10% to 20% of patients with rectal mucosal prolapse and total rectal prolapse, but the minimally invasive nature of the therapy was felt to justify it as an initial choice. Most complications and recurrences after ALTA treatment occurred in the first year. We clarified indications for ALTA treatment and some details of the procedure. The results of ALTA sclerosing therapy so far have been encouraging.<br>
