Bone lesions with diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis (DSO) of the mandible were examined using bone scintigraphy and plain radiography. Four out of 5 patients who underwent bone scintigraphy exhibited hot spots at bones other than the mandible, and in 3 patients, bone lesions were confirmed on plain radiographs as well, which manifested osteolysis and sclerosis, periosteal bone formation, osteophyte formation, and an appearance similar to that of ankylosing spondylitis. These radiographic features were similar to those of bone lesions observed in patients affected by synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, osteitis (SAPHO) Syndrome and chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO). It is suggested that DSO and SAPHO Syndrome including CRMO are closely related entities.
