Abstract

In this report, we describe the growth mechanism and emission characteristics of an Er2SiO5 superlattice crystal, which is a promising light source for silicon photonics. This crystalline compound contains a high proportion of Er ions (above 20 at%) as the constituent element, resulting in the prevention of concentration quenching, and exhibits fine structure in its PL spectrum even at room temperature. The Er2SiO5 superlattice crystal is formed by phase separation, and does not agree with the phase diagram of rare-earth silicates reported previously. Because of this, highly oriented Er2SiO5 superlattice crystal thin films can be obtained on Si substrates. We propose the use of Er2SiO5 nanocrystallites embedded in SiOx produced by phase separation growth as a novel light source for silicon photonics.
